Mr. Hughes, who had suffered from a heart condition for the past three months, had been trimming a a neighbor's hedge and had gone into the house to rest when the fatal seizure occurred.
He retired in 1952 after 46 years service with the C&O.
Born, October 17, 1885, in Lewis County, at Covedale, Mr. Hughes was a son of the late John F. and Belle Secrest Hughes. He was married to the former Miss Mary L. Dixon and only last May the couple had observed their 49th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Concord Christian Church where he served as superintendent and taught a Bible class. He held membership also in the Concord Independent Order of Oddfellows and the Rebekahs. He was one of the most highly respected members of his community and enjoyed the admiration of a legion of friends.
Besides his wife, he leaves the following children; Mrs. M.B. Craycraft, of Concord, Mrs. Bessie Talley, of Chicago, Mrs. Ross Hord, of Kenova, WV, Mrs. Elmer Horton, of Anderson IN, Luther and Fred Hughes of Cincinnati, OH, and John and Eugene Hughes of Raceland. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Stella Deshon of Tulsa, OK.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3pm from the Concord Christian Church by the Rev. Charles Baker; pastor of the Raceland Christian Church. Burial was in the Concord Cemetery.
