Funeral Services for Clyde Clifton Hughes, aged 60, of Concord, who died of a heart attack Saturday morning aboard the towboat, D.W. Wisherd, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 from the Concord Christian Chruch with Rev. W. H. Mayfield, of Cincinnati, officiating. Interment followed in the Concord Cemetery.
Mr. Hughes served as fireman on the boat. He reported to duty about 7:45am Saturday morning after having been off work for several months due to a heart ailment. The boat pulled out at 8:30am and was two miles down stream when Mr. Hughes expired.
Capt. Russell Lucas ordered the boat back to Concord where Coroner H.M. Bertram was summoned. Capt. Lucas said that after Mr. Hughes had shoveled coal he went to the upper deck for a cup of coffee. There he collapsed and died almost at once.
After returning the body to Concord the Wisherd, which carries coal between Huntington, WV continued downstream.
Mr. Hughes was born October 17, 1885, in this county, the son of John F. and Missouri Bell Hughes. He was very highly regarded by all his associates.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Iva Hughes, two sons, Kenneth and Lawrence Hughes, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Vance, Mrs. Albert Little, both of Cincinnati, and Miss Thelma Hughes, at home; three brothers, his twin Carl Hughes, and Oscar and John Hughes, all of Concord, and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Bennett, of St. Albans, WV and Mrs. Stella Deshon of Tulsa, OK.
