Littleton – N. H. – John Ward Berry, 73, passed away Monday, December 30, 1996, at Littleton Regional Hospital due to complications from pneumonia after a short illness. A native of Thorndike, he was born May 25, 1923, a son of Clayton and Luella (Ward) Berry.
He attended schools in Unity before enlisting in the U. S. Navy in September 1941. After enlisting, he specialized in radio communications serving time on the U.S.S. Sproston in the Pacific Theater going on to receive the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and three Bronze Stars, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars.
After the war, John returned to Old Town, where he spent ten years as a machine operator for local shoe industry companies. He moved to Littleton in 1958 and married Doris I. Fisher on November 14, 1959. At this time he became employed with Henshel Shoe of Littleton from 1959-1971 and later Connor's & Hoffman shoe from 1974-1979. He was an independent truck driver/contractor for the U. S. Postal Service for several years. At the time of his death, he had been distributing newspapers for the Sherwin-Dodge Company of Littleton since 1986 throughout the North Country. He was the founder and operator of Berry's Mobil Home Park in 1962 until he sold the park in 1989.
He was an avid bowler and 1967 state champion, enjoyed golf, fishing and outdoor life in general.
Surviving family members include his wife of 37 years, Doris Berry of Littleton; two sons, Donald L. Johnson of Littleton and Howard G. Johnson of Whitefield, N.H.; a daughter, Linda M. Johnson of Bristol, Conn.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, George, Raymond and Kenneth.
Committal services will be held in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
