Solomon was the eldest of four children born to Rev. Levi M. & Lydia (Cheesman) Cochran. He married (1) Dianthe Davis on 12 Oct 1846 in Bristol, Kenosha, Wisconsin. They were the parents of six children: Cecelia Gilbert, Albert, Lydia Barker, Eva Chaffey, Clara Seely, and Lee Cochran. He and Diantha were divorced and he married (2) Mary Hawthorne on 08 Jun 1862 in Tama Co., Iowa. They were the parents of five children: Alfred, James Walter, Jennie May, Solomon "Eddie" and Annie Cochran. He was the brother of Sophronia Cochran, Cynthia (Cochran) Castle and Elizabeth (Cochran) Smith.
