Matilda was born the daughter of Edmund Hendley Richards Sr. and Sarah Warren in Robertson County TN. Her parents, relatives, and friends had transplanted there from Franklin Co Virginia in 1814.

Then, in 1830 at the age of 7, Matilda moved north with her parents into Illinois and settled in North Otter Township of Macoupin Co. As "First Settlers", they purchased land, built homes, and raised their young. Matilda [1823] and her sister Mary [1826] wedded the Park brothers, John and
Thomas [1823], respectively.

John and Matilda, married on January 30 1840, had these children:
1. John A. Park [1846]
2. Elizabeth [1849]
3. Thomas Jefferson Park [1852-1925]
4. George Washington Park [1858-1931]

Matilda and John remained in the area with their families throughout their lives.
