John was born the son of Edmund Hendley Richards Sr. and Sarah Ann Warren in Franklin County Virginia, near his grandfather Edward's plantation which lay just 6.4 miles south east of Rocky Mount [between Sydnorsville and Sontag].

The Richards relocated to Robertson County Tennessee in 1814 when John was 5 years old. Then, in 1830, they made the final move on to Macoupin County Illinois.

John appears in the 1830 census of Macoupin County with a wife, no name given, but does not appear in the 1840 tax records of Macoupin County.

John purchased 40 acres of land near his parents and siblings in section 30 of North Otter Township of Macoupin County on November 11 1833, and then 80 acres in section 15 of South Otter Township on June 17 1836.
