TENNESSEE ROOTS
Caleb was the 6th son, one of 11 siblings, born of Edmund Hendley Richards Sr. [1783-1840] VA/TN/IL and Sarah Ann Warren. He was born and spent his boyhood near modern-day Springfield of Robertson Co TN [directly north of Nashville].

THE MOVE TO ILLINOIS
In 1830, when Caleb was 11, he accompanied his parents, relatives, and family friends into Macoupin County Illinois, which had just been organized in 1829. They were among the early settlers there. He grew into a man on his father's farm about 3 miles east of Modesto in North Otter Township.

MARRIAGE
He married Nancy Gibson, daughter of Hugh and Margaret Gibson, March 19 1837 in Macoupin County IL. HE farmed there for three seasons.

PLATTE PURCHASE
Caleb and Nancy decided to "pioneer" for themselves when new land opened in Missouri. They made their way to north west Missouri in spring of 1841 [following the Platte purchase from the Cherokee Indians] with brother Zachariah W. Richards & family, his mother Sarah Ann, the James and Charity McPeeters family, the Peter Stewart family, and the Henry Carter family. [Henry had married Caleb's brother Enoch's widow].

Again, they were among the earliest settlers in the area, and were quite literally on the edge of civilization. There were fewer than 20,000 white settlers west of the Mississippi River before 1845-46, when the great western expansion began. Caleb purchased land, farmed, and bred livestock in Andrew County, then Gentry, and finally Nodaway Counties. The three counties are adjacent to one another.

LAND
Missouri land records show Caleb purchased 160 acres on December 19 1846 in Section 18, northeast quarter, of Andrew County. Caleb's brother Zachariah purchased 160 acres in the north west quarter of Section 18. They were indeed neighbors!

CHILDREN
Caleb and Nancy begat five children:
1. Sarah Ann [1838] IL +R.M. McClantham
2. Hugh Gibson [1839] IL Civil War vet
3. Margaret Jane [1842] MO +John W. Kelly
4. Edmund H. [1850] MO +Hannah Campbell
5. Mary Elizabeth [1852] MO +Christopher David Raney

HISTORICAL RECORD
In the book "A History of Nodaway County", Caleb is noted as being a Democrat in politics and a Presbyterian in faith.
By the 1870 census Caleb & family were in Gentry County were son Edmund and his new wife lived. Caleb eventually downsized to a farm of 90 acres and moved to Nodaway Co MO, near the town of Guilford.

CIVIL WAR
Caleb's son, Hugh Gibson Richards, joined the Union and served. Caleb's brother, Zachariah, had a son, Zachariah Franklin Richards, enlisted at age 15 in the Missouri militia for the Confederacy. These two families only lived a few miles apart. It is ironic.
