Besides his parents, he was proceeded in death by his first wife, Ella Jane Vermillion, whom he married in 1865. She passed away June 5, 1901; he is survived by his second wife, Sarah (Sally) McElfresh, whom he married in 1905. (She passed away July 24, 1920.)
Born in Ohio, John grew up in Warren, Jefferson County, and later moved between Wells, Jefferson County and Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia, before moving to East Liverpool. He was a construction worker by trade, and built flatbed boats, a skill he learned from his father & grandfather.
