Richard B. M. Gatten, 80, of Carlisle, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Carlisle. He was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Wheeling, WV and was a son of the late Clyde R. and Violet M. (Warner) Gatten.

Richard was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired in 1994 after more than 20 years of service as a machinist with the former TRW Co. in Harrisburg. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie 1299 and a life member of V.F.W. Post 477 all of Carlisle. Richard enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Thelma B. (Unger) Gatten, a step-daughter, Martha (and her husband, William) Russell of Shippensburg, a step-son, William (and his wife, Carol) Lehman of Lenexa, KS, a grandson, Rusty Shughart, two step-granddaughters, Penny Hess and Susan Harlan, one step great-granddaughter, Samantha Harlan, two brothers, William Gatten of Carlisle and Kenneth Gatten of New Cumberland, three sisters, Patricia Haydon of Mechanicsburg and Lilly Gatten and Beulah Powell and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by one sister, Drucilla G. Yana, two brothers, Clyde and Sherrill Lee Gatten and a step-son, Richard Lehman.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther St., Carlisle with Rev. Timothy W. Sadler officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 - 11:00 a.m. at the church. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials can be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W.
