Joseph (Joel) Cornelius Abbott was born in Penn, St. Joseph County, Indiana on July 19, 1849 to Curtis Godfrey and Catherine (Dils) Abbott. His father, Curtis, started out west and ended up in Oak Grove, Wasco County, Oregon where Joel would fallow in 1876. They would have a large scale sheep ranch that would keep them all busy.
In 1881 Joseph bought a home stead from Augustin Delore, four years later he would follow the Delore Family to Suplee, Crook County, Oregon where he would marry Augustin daughter, Mary, on April 22, 1885 in Crook County, Oregon. The land he chose to settle down on would have a natural hot springs on it. They would build a home and Joel would be the first post master for Suplee. The family would live here and have four children before they moved back to Hood River and Wasco, county, Oregon. They would have three more children, twin boys and a daughter Mary who would die as infants. The youngest son Henry would be born in Hood River 1911. Just seven years later Joel would pass away, death certificate says from Carcinoma (Cancer) of the bladder. The first time the doctor sees Joel in The Dalles Hospital is on November 13th and just five days later he would be gone. With no autopsy down could this have been a bladder infection which could have been cured with antibiotics ten years later with the invention of penicillin. Perhaps he was a smoker, but he was gone at the age of 69. He is buried in the Kelly cemetery in the family plot next to his mother and father. He would leave behind his wife, Mary, and five children; Minnie Phelps, Curtis Abbott, Rufus, Abbott, Frances Thomas ( Martin), and Henry Abbott.
