ABBOTT, CURTIS JOEL JR
Curtis Carnillias (Joel) Abbott was born at Suplee, Oregon at The Abbott Hot Springs Ranch, what is now the Webreg ranch. He went into the service during WWI and ended up way over in France as there cook and night guard. He came home and bought a place in Suplee. He met and married Orisa Sears. They sold their place in Suplee and moved to Redmond where Orisa worked at the Redmond Hospital. Joel and Orisa divorced in 1939 but neither remarried.
Curt was heading to Wapintia from Hood River on the back of a horse. Something spooked the horse and the horse fell with Joel. He had a rifle with him that went off and shot him in the leg. The horse took off and left him hurt bad. He used part of his shirt to make a tourniquet. He laid there and when the Blue Jays started clattering loud enough to wake him up he would releases or tightens the tourniquet. Finally after a few days some Indian women from Warm Springs were heading into The Dalles, they threw him over the horse and brought him into The Dalles hospital. Aunt Dona remembers helping him after he got out of the hospital. She said they put maggots in the wound to eat the infected – dead muscle and they would change the wrapping.
In The Dalles paper it mentions the Forman's going into town to visit Curtis Abbott who and accidently shot himself and that he was getting along fine.

Joel and Orisa would have three sons, Harold, Ron and Ken. Ken would drown in a boating accident off Winchester Bay. Joel would spend his later years working for the Abbott's in Wapinitia and working as a bartender between Odell and Hood River. He passed away in 1965 and is buried in the Willamette National Cemetery.
