Mary Zoe Delore was born April 12th 1867 to Augustin and Zoe Marie (Quintal) Delore at Wapinitia, Oregon. The Delore family were French Canada's and coming to Oregon Long before the settlers with the Hudson Bay Fur Company.French and the Native American were the main language spoken in the home. Mary would attend school at Wapinitia and for three years from 1877 – 1880 at the Warm Springs Reservation.
She would just turn 18 ten days before, when she married a Joel Abbott 34 years old. They were married In Prineville, Oregon on April 22, 1885. Augustin Delore moved his family in the early 1880 to Suplee, he had sold his land to Joel C Abbott in 1881. It appears our Joel would follow Mary to Crook County. They would set up house in Suplee on a piece of land that would have a hot springs on it, where Joel would be the first post master of Suplee. The first four children would be born here. The land now belongs to the Webergs.
The family would move back to Wasco and Hood River County. Mary would have three more children a daughter Mary and twin boys born that would die as infants. The youngest son Henry would be born in Hood River 1911. Just seven years later she would lose Joel, death certificate says from Carcinoma (Cancer) of the bladder. Six months later her oldest daughter Minnie would die leaving seven small children.
In hopes of getting some help, Mary applied for rights of Indian Heritage after the death of Joel at both the Colville and Grand Ronde Reservations. After all her mother was from the Colville tribe and grandfather had been the Chief of the Grand Ronde. But her mother had never been registered on the reservation and Louis Quintal, her grandfather, had only been adopted by the Grand Ronde tribe as he could speak French, English and the Indian Language. The Colville Tribe described her as Blackfoot, Chinook, and Iroquois, being a half breed born in Oregon.
Mary and youngest son, Henry, would be close the rest of their lives. Pictures of Mary, Charles Hiatt and Henry show them picking fruit to make a living. In 1930 Henry and his family are living at Elkhorn, Marion County, Oregon with Mary and Charles Hiatt living next door.
Mary would be living in Deschutes County and Henry would not be far at what we called Tetherow, just outside of Redmond, Oregon. Their is a bit of confusion on her birth year. Tombstone says 1863 to last censes says 1874. In applications to reservations in her own hand writing she writes 1867, so I have chose this as her birth year. The family says Grandma Hiatt had a colorful personality which everyone enjoyed. She would live at the Sunset Home in Bend when she passed away in 1953.
