Albert Adolphus Leake is the son of Walter Scott and Margaret Isabelle Bellis Leake of Orrick, Missouri. He was one of 9 children. His siblings were George W., Gustavus L., Samuel W., Minnie C. (Farris Miller), Mary Jane "Mollie" (Penniston), Florence E., Rufus E., and Otha M. The Leake family originally comes from England, settling in Goochland County, Virginia. This line of the family settled in Virginia before 1690, in Kentucky before 1790, and Missouri before 1840.

Albert left home in 1881 to go west. He first located in New Mexico where he was a cowboy for 10 years. Albert married Jessie Ann Hunter in Kansas on March 2,1890. They moved to Kansas for six years, then to central California for eight years, then to Southern California. For several years he managed a ranch. He was well traveled, being to 35 states and to Mexico, Canada, and Cuba.

They had three children: Donna Lenore (Gauntlett), Helen Evelyn (Hayes), and LaRue Barbara (Smith).
