Walter Scott Leake was the son of Matilda F. Jones and Benjamin Franklin Leake. His parents came from Kentucky to Missouri, where he was born. His siblings were: John, Thomas "T.J.", James S., Charles E., Elizabeth "Lizzie" E. and Henry Clay.

His grandparents were Walter Leake, Sr. (1768-1853) and Susanna Jones (1770-1848) of Mayslick, Mason Co, Kentucky. They had moved to Kentucky from Goochland Co, VA. in the early 1800s.

He married Margaret Isabell Bellis on Sept 25, 1858 in Ray County, MO. They had nine children: George Washington, Albert Adolphus, Samuel Walter, Gustavus Leonadus, Minnie Cordelia (Farris, Miller), Mary Jane "Mollie" (Penniston), Florence Emma, Rufus Emmett and Otha Monroe.

From census records, Walter spent most of his life in Ray County, MO. He and his wife were associated with the North Bluffton Baptist Church of Ray County where he was a clerk from 1886-1901. It is now called the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and named to National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
