Obit in the Correctionville News, 8 August 1912, page 1: Mrs. Melissa Castle, a former well-known resident of Correctionville, died Thursday August 1, 1912, at her home in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. She was the wife of William Castle, one of the earliest settlers of Correctionville, who died September 14, 1900. He came to Iowa in 1856 and in 1872 he and his family located in Kedron Township and bought land. Melissa Lewis, widow of the late William Castle, was born in Potter Co., Pennsylvania, January 31, 1838, and died August 1, 1912, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 1 day. She married William Castle in Potter's Co., Pennsylvania, in 1855. One year later she moved with her husband to Buffalo Grove, Iowa. In 1872 they moved to Correctionville. August 7, 1903, she moved to Bonner's Ferry where she lived until the time of her death. Eleven of thirteen children survive: Frank Castle of Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Jane Watson of Lynch, Nebraska, Mrs. Lowetta Dicus and Mrs. William Kryger of Bridgeport, Washington, George, Orson and Oscar Castle of Correctionville, Mrs. Christine Blakesley of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Nettie Stone, Will Castle and Mrs. Anna Stone of Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. The only child away who attended the funeral was Mrs. Watson. In early life Mrs. Castle united with the Free Methodist Church, from which she never withdrew. In a letter to her sons she expressed her trust in Christ, her constant interest in her own salvation and that of her children, and her perfect resignation to God's will as to life or death. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son Orson D. Castle, Rev. A. Jamieson officiating. Interment was made in Correctionville Cemetery.
