Twin brother of Orson D. Castle

Obit in The Correctionville News, 16 December 1943, page 1: With the passing of Oscar D. Castle another of the few remaining pioneers of this community has gone to that far country from which none return. Oscar D. Castle, son of William and Melissa Castle, was born on a farm in Buchanan County, Iowa, on December 25, 1860, and came to the close of his earthly life in his home on Tuesday, December 7, 1943. Had he lived until Christmas Day he and his twin brother, Orson D. Castle, would have observed their 83rd birthday anniversary. Mr. Castle came with his parents to the eastern part of Woodbury County in 1871, where the father traded one of the covered wagons and a yoke of oxen for forty acres of land in the Little Sioux valley. Here the family lived for a time and in the spring of 1873 moved to the farm purchased in Union township which is now a part of the town of Correctionville and where Mr. Castle grew to manhood, learning the tinner's trade at which he worked for several years. Later he learned the jeweler's trade, and in 1890 the firm known as O.D. Castle and Brother was established, being one of the oldest business houses in Correctionville, operating continuously until last October, when the doors to this pioneer firm were closed. Mr. Castle taught a class in the Methodist Sunday school for twenty-five years, was a member of the church choir for thirty years, and was recording steward on the official board and treasurer over fifty years. He not only had a Christian faith but also practiced it in his business and social life. His whole life was dedicated to what he believed to be right, and was a living witness of the Christian way of life. On December 28, 1892, Mr. Castle was united in marriage with Miss Addie Goucher of Correctionville. To this union two children were born: Lynn E. of Hollywood, Illinois, and Beth (Mrs. Oscar Kilbourn) of San Bernardino, California. There were also eight grandchildren and one great grandson. Three of the grandsons are now in the service of their country. Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Tillie Kryger of Yuma, Arizona, Mrs. Nettie Smith of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Mrs. Anna Smith of Bend, Oregon, and his twin brother, Orson D. Castle of Correctionville, numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. W.H. Lease in charge. Burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery under direction of Osborn Funeral Home of Pierson.
