Prominent Afton Citizen Dies of Heart Ailment

P.P. Baldwin, 71, prominent Afton citizen and well-known political figure throughout Lincoln County and the entire state of Wyoming, succumbed Tuesday evening, May 27, at about 11:15 p.m. in his home at Afton of a heart ailment which had left him in a critical condition since he suffered a stroke last October.
Having lived in Star Valley ever since coming to Smoot as a school teacher in 1903, except for five years spent in Kemmerer as assistant cashier of the Kemmerer savings bank, Mr Baldwin's influence has been greatly felt by the community which mourns his passing. Active as a rancher, school teacher, banker, freighter, notary public, insurance agent and abstractor, insurance examiner member of the state legislature for two terms, attorney for the Town of Afton, and a member of the Lincoln County Fair Board for many years, few men have merited as much prestige in community, county and state circles as has Mr Baldwin and the members of his extra large family. He was also cashier of the Freedom State Bank when it opened about four decades ago.
Besides being very active in civic affairs, Mr Baldwin held the office of High Priest in the LDS Star Valley Stake, and served in various capacities in the church, including the following: Counselor in the Smoot Wyoming, ward bishopric, Ward Clerk in the Kemmerer LDS Ward superintendent of Sunday School and president of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association of the Afton South ward. He also fulfilled an LDS mission in New York City.'
Parley Pratt Baldwin was born October 1, 1880 at beaver, Utah, the son of Jesse and Martha Desretta Fullmer Baldwin.
He was married to Stella Taggart in the Salt Lake Temple on April 11, 1906. To this union fourteen children were born, thirteen of whom survive him, along with his widow. They are Jesse Albert Baldwin, Brigham City, Utah; Mrs Stella Blanch Gardner, Pinedale; Parley Theodore Baldwin (deceased 1924); Oliver Franklin Baldwin Rock Springs; Luther William Baldwin, Sheridan; Mrs Ruby Christensen Grover; Douglas A Baldwin Kaysville, Utah; Sol Taggart Baldwin, Sheridan; Melvin Leon Baldwin, Evanston; Mrs Nellie Kathleen Averett, Torrington; Mrs Helen Morgan Niagara Falls N.Y.; Dick Taggart Baldwin, Hawthorne Calif,; Donald J Baldwin Naval Air Corps; Mrs Hermonine Petersen Afton.
Mr Baldwin is also survived by 32 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; Charles Thadeus Baldwin, Ogden Utah; Ernest Franklin Baldwin, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs Retta Robinson, Los Angeles, Calif,; Mrs Martha Briggs, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs Sarah Patterson, Beaver, Utah; Mrs Charlotte Jacobson, Modesto, California; Mrs Stella McIntyre, Ontario Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Afton South Ward bishopric at the Star Valley Stake House at Afton, Saturday May 31 at 1 p.m.
The remains will be at the Baldwin home Friday evening and friends may call if they desire.
