Ellis B. Bailey obituary, Waynesburg Republican, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, 21 January 1897, page 1, column 8.

"Mr. Ellis B. Bailey died at his home in Cumberland township, near Carmichaels, Sunday afternoon, January 17, 1897. For over four years he had been afflicted with paralysis, which slowly reached to every portion of his body, when the end came. He bore his affliction most patiently and never murmured. Mr. Bailey was born not far from his present home, November 21, 1824. His parents came from Chester county and belonged to the society of Friends. He was reared in Fayette county and attended Madison College at Uniontown. From the school he turned his attention to farming and stock raising, returning to Greene county. But few men of the county have been his equal and probably none his superior, as a financier. He amassed quite a fortune in real estate and other investments. For years he has [line damaged in microfilm] the New Providence Presbyterian church. It might well be said of him, "Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." In politics he had always been a straight forward Republican, showing in this, as in his business and his religion, that same active spirit which prompted him always to do with his might what his hands found to do. His wife, Harriet (Gaddis) survives him, and seven children. His daughter, Frances, wife of Mr. T. H. Hawkins was the only one of his children who crossed the "dark river" before him. The surviving sons and daughters live in Cumberland township not far removed from their old home. They are, W. H.; J. Ewing, J. Edgar, George E., Eli F., R. Loyd and Anna R. wife of George F. Luse. All are members of the New Providence church and the oldest, William H., an elder, on whom has fallen his father's mantle. The funeral took place from the house, Tuesday, January 19, at one o'clock. The services were conducted by his pastor Rev. William Hudson."
