PAULINE SPECIAL –

Funeral services for Gussie DeLore of Suplee were Tuesday at the family cemetery at Suplee, with Rev W N Byars of the Prineville Community church reading the service. Mr. DeLore died Sunday, March 21, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chet Smith, in Prineville, after an extended illness. Born April 25, 1873, at Wapinitia, Oregon, he came to central Oregon and settled in the Suplee district in 1886, and had made his home there since that time. His wife preceded him in death in 1906. Besides Mrs. Smith he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Lemley of Priest River, Idaho, and Mrs. Lora McCullough of Post; one son, Sedrick E DeLore of Suplee; one sister, Mrs. Mary Abbott of Madras, Oregon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. CENTRAL OREGONIAN 3/22/1943

Gus Delore, or Long Gus, (as he stood well over 6 feet tall) was probably the first of his siblings to be born in Wapinitia, Oregon. His father, Augustin, had moved from French Prairie in the Willamette Valley to Oak Grove in 1872. He was one of eight children born to Augustin and Zoe "Mary" Quintal Delore. At the age of sixteen the family moved to Suplee where he would live out the rest of his years. Gus and Iva Joy Myrtle Hinkle were married at Gus's mother's house on July 17th 1897. They would have 6 children, two of them Iva May and Edna Della would die young. Sheepherder, sheerer, freighter, and farmer were all jobs that we know Gus took on. When the old homestead burnt down Gus rebuilt, building a home closer to the creek for his mother. Myrtle passed away December 1, 1907 death certificate says probably after a miscarriage which turned septic, she was only 26 years old. Gus seems to have stayed single and raised the children on his own. He passed away at his daughter's home in Prineville in 1943 a month short of his 71st birthday.
