Augustin Delore, Mountain man, fur trapper, Indian fighter and Scout came to the Oregon Territory when just a boy. Referred to as Quinn Delore in all the history books, he settled with his father, Joseph Delore, in 1838 long before the settlers. The over land rescue party in 1848 who rescued the immigrants coming over the Applegate Pass, our Quinn Delore was one of them. The Oregon Argus mentions that he lost a horse and a gun. The Indians stole the horse and the gun he traded to an Indian to borrow his canoe to ford the children and women across the river. Our young Augustin Delore was only 18 years old when he took on the adventure of crossing the Rocky Mountains to rescue the stranded and starving immigrants, at time the snow was three feet deep. He was a scout for both the Cayuse and Yakima Indian Wars.
He married Zoe Quintal, Zewell or Zoe later on in life she seemed to go by the name of Jimmy or Mary. According to the censes one would say they had eight children. But I find only three that made it to adults. With the settlers coming in, more and more diseases were coming too; theses diseases were hard on everyone but especial for the Indians who had no resistance to them.
Augustin settled in the Willamette Valley first, moved to Wapintia, Oregon in about 1872, and moved to Suplee in the early 1800's. According to The Dalles Mountaineer, July 1, 1891, Augustin was struck by lightning. Chehalem Valley Times - An old pioneer of Grant County, Augustus Delore, died at the Abbott Hot Spring, October 26th 1891. His death was due to being struck by lightning about years ago.
