Liebenthal -- Florence Matal, 80, died April 26 at Hays Medical Center. She was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Liebenthal, the daughter of Alexander and Mary Doerfler Pfeifer.

She married Henry Matal May 7, 1941. He died April 17, 1998.

A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Matal was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and St. Ann's Altar Society, both of Liebenthal.

Survivors include two sons, Norman Lee Francis Matal of Liebenthal and Joseph Harrison Matal of Hudson, Colo.; one daughter, Shirley Ann Waldroupe of Salina; one brother, Joe Pfeifer of Hays; three sisters, Caroline Steckline of Alva, Okla., Marie Schwartz and Elnora Schmidt, both of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Celestine Pfeifer and Gerald Pfeifer; one sister, Armella Schmidt; one grandson, Joseph James Matal; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas Matal and Lindsey Matal.

Wake service, followed by a rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Liebenthal. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Florence Matal Memorial, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse.
