Mantle C. Avey, 91 of Leavenworth and a resident of the Wenatchee Valley for the past 83 years, died Saturday evening, June 22, 2002 in the Parkside Healthcare Center.

He was born Sept. 3, 1910 to Alva C. and Martha B. (George) Avey at Albion, IA and as a young child the family moved to Columbus, MT. In 1919, they moved to Wenatchee, where Mantle attended school and grew up. He sold newspapers for the Wenatchee Sun and later the Daily World.

In 1934, he moved to Leavenworth, where he worked in the family orchard. In 1935, he married Millie Gill at Leavenworth, where they made their home. Mantle worked for the Charles A. Wright Mill for many years and later the Peshastin Lumber and Box. He was a heavy equipment operator in the road-building section of the mill.

On Sept. 13, 1972, he married Ophelia Rutherford Avey in Wenatchee. He later was employed by Tree Top, Inc. from 1968 until 1975. Mantle worked for many local orchardists for several years following his retirement. He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

Mantle is survived by his wife, Ophelia R. Avey of the family home; two sons, Bob and Sandi Avey of Stockton, CA and Don and Linda Avey of Waterville; daughter, Diana and Dan Tunnell of Stockton, CA; stepson, Ralph and Artis Avey of Marysville; stepdaughters, Peggy and Arunas Bluidnikas of Grand Rapids, MI and LaVetta and Bill West of Snohomish; special friend, Dawn Fike of Leavenworth; brothers, Albert Avey of East Wenatchee, Robert Avey of Cashmere; sisters, Hazel LaRose of Bend, OR and Thelma Widmer of Peshastin; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, stepson Charles Avey, brothers Cliff Avey, Dallas Avey, James Avey and Dan Avey and sisters Ethel and Clara Avey.

A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Mantle C. Avey, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday morning, June 28, 2002 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery.

Those wishing to make visitation may call at the Chapel, Thursday, June 27, 2002 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
