Robert "Ted" Avey, 90, a resident of Cashmere and a 65 year resident of the Wenatchee Valley, died Monday morning, January 12, 2004, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born on May 16, 1913 to Alva Clinton and Martha (George) Avey at Columbus, Montana. In 1919 the family moved to Wenatchee valley, where he grew up and received his early education. Ted worked in the family orchard and on June 9, 1938 he married Mary Ruth Kellams at Leavenworth, where they made their home. He worked for the Washington State Highway Department on Blewett Pass and Stevens Pass for 10 years.
In 1949, they moved to Stockton, California, where he was employed by the Ford Motor Company until 1968, when they moved to Cashmere. Ted had been employed by several orchardists until his retirement.
Ted was a Ford Car Buff and he very much loved his wife, children and grandchildren and always found delight in telling stories. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Stockton, California.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruth of the family home. One daughter, Betty Merkel and her husband, Dennis of Lodi, California; two sons, John C. Avey and his wife Millie of Hesperia, California and Eugene Avey and his wife, LaVonne of Wenatchee; one brother, Albert "Buck" Avey of East Wenatchee; two sisters, Thelma Widmer of Peshastin and Hazel LaRose of Redmond, Oregon; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Robert "Ted" Avey, will be conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, January 22, 2004 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Bob Jackson, officiating. The service will conclude in the chapel, with private family inurnment in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in East Wenatchee. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
