Born of Scotchish descent in Ireland, almost 2 years old, William arrived in Philadelphia, PA April 17, 1851 aboard the vessel "Tuscarora" with his parents, older sister Jane and brother James. The family settled first in a house on the western edge of Philadelphia near the Schuylkill River, and then along Cobb Creek near 68th St. & Kingsessing Ave. in Philadelphia County, PA, where the family grew and the children were educated.
When of age, 1870, William and his older brother James and James new wife, Sarah, went to Kansas to homestead. They began a farm in Section 10, Walnut Township, in Saline County. As many homesteaders of that day, their first home was a dugout on the prairie. Space dug out of the side of a hill with a sod roof and dirt floor. In December of 1879, William married Frances Ellen (Ackerman) Clark, a widow with two small children.
William and Frances, increasing their family, worked the farm and received the Land Patent in 1881. The farm was prospering and William had started to purchase cattle to expand when in 1890, at the age of 41, he was kicked by a horse and died of a concussion. William was survived by his wife of 11 years, 6 children, one an infant son, 2 step-children; and two brothers, Wallace of Philadelpia, PA and Robert of Saline Co.
William was laid to rest in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery with his parents, older brother James, sister Jane and youngest brother Samuel.
