Caroline Kilfoyle was the sixth of nine children born to James Holbrook Kilfoyle and his wife, Jane Lucas. She was born in 1839 in Ontario, Canada. Her mother had been married previously and had four children from that marriage. When Caroline was about seven years old, her family joined the LDS church and left Ontario, moving to Nauvoo, Illinois in about 1846. They fled Nauvoo, traveling to Council Bluffs, Iowa and were still there in 1853 when Caroline's mother, Jane, died. Caroline was just 14 years old and her father remarried within a short time. That wife also died within the first year after marrying Caroline's father and he remarried again. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1853.
In 1856, Caroline was 17 years old and took employment in the home of George G. and Sarah Hatch Snyder. Sarah had several children and was in need of help caring for the children and home. At that time, George Snyder had two wives, Sarah and Elsie. In June of 1856, Caroline also married George as his third wife. Within a few months, she had convinced the family to have her sister, Martha, who was recovering from an illness, come to live with them in order for her to care for her. Shortly after she moved in with the family, George took Martha as his 4th wife.
Caroline and the other wives moved many times over the next twenty years. They had farms and homes in Salt Lake City, Bountiful, Wellsville, Wanship, and Snyderville. Caroline had eleven children over the next twenty-three years. George's first wife, Sarah, died in 1861, leaving several children to be raised by Caroline and the two other wives. In 1865, her sister, Martha, also died and left three small children also. By this time, George had married two more wives. The care of Sarah and Martha's children fell to Caroline, Elsie, and now Rhoda.
By 1880, Caroline and her family had moved to the Snyder ranch in Snyderville. She had lived for many years in Wanship with her growing family. She was active in the LDS church, serving as Relief Society president in Wanship. George Snyder had served in many capacities in the LDS church. Her last child, Jane (Jennie) was born in Snyderville in 1880.
George G. Snyder died in 1887 at the Snyder ranch in Snyderville. Caroline lived for two more years and died suddenly after a brief illness. She was just fifty years old. Caroline is buried next to George in the Park City cemetery. She was survived by ten children who all lived to adulthood and productive lives.
