Death came to Miss Powell on December 24 in Hershey hospital, Muscatine. The survivors include a number of nephews and nieces.
Born near Hazel Dell in Drury, March 14, 1862, of John and Amanda Batchelor Powell, she graduated from Muscatine High School and was awarded a scholarship in college.
After leaving college she did secretarial work in Chicago. Becoming the private secretary of Leland Stanford, railroad official and senator from California, she went to that state and remained in his employ for 15 years.
After serving in the U.S. Army Arsenal in SanBernardino, Calif., she won a competitive examination and was awarded a position at the War Department in Washington, D.C., where she remained until her retirement at age 65.
She had been a resident of the Capital City for 39 years. Because of health failure she was brought early in December to Hershey hospital, Muscatine, where her death occurred as stated above.
