Illinois City -- Sherman M. Powell, Sr., 79, lifelong resident and retired farmer of the Illinois City vicinity, died at 6 o'clock this morning at his farm home near here following a brief illness.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Mr. Powell was born near Illinois City, April 18, 1867, a son of John and Amanda Powell. He married Margaret Tyler Feb. 28, 1901, in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Tyler, in Illinois. He attended business college in Valparaiso, Ind. Mr. Powell was a member of the Illinois City Methodist church.
Surviving are the widow; four daughters, Mesdames Bernice Fowler of Rock Island, president of the Woman's Club of Rock Island, Eva of Taylor Ridge, and Jeanette Feldman of Illinois City and Miss Odette Powell at home; four sons, Vaughn, Allen, Sherman, Jr., and Roscoe, and a sister, Miss Maude Powell of Washington, D. C.

POWELL RITES SUNDAY FROM ILLINOIS CITY
Elderly Resident Dies in Sleep Thursday

Funeral Services for Sherman Powell, 78, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from his home in Illinois City and at 2:30 p.m. from the Illinois Methodist church. The rites were read by the pastor, Rev. E. H. Hill and interment was in Illinois City cemetery.
Mr. Powell, a life long resident and a prominent farmer of the Illinois City community was found dead in bed about 6 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Powell operated a large farm about a mile south of Illinois City.
Mr. Powell was born April 12, 1868 and married Miss Margaret Tyler on Feb. 28, 1901, the marriage taking place at the home of her parents, William C. and Mary Ann Tyler, at Illinois City.
ATTEND METHODIST
Mr. Powell attended the Hazel Dell school and the Brown Business Collegiate Valparaiso, Ind. He was a member of the Methodist church of Illinois City, and also of the Illinois City lodge of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Surviving are his wife, four sons, Vaughn, Allen, Sherman Jr., and Roscoe Powell, all of Illinois City, four daughters, Mrs Bernice Fowler of Rock Island, Mrs. Eva Fuhr of Taylor Ridge, Mrs. Jeanette Feldman of Illinois City and Miss Odette Powell, at home; one sister, Miss Maude Powell of Washington, D.C.; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Sherman M. Powell, age 78, were conducted on Sunday in the Illinois City Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. Edwin H. Hill. Internment was in the Illinois City cemetery.
Olney Keller, Harry Danner, Omer Keller, Wesley Krueger, Earl Price and Raymond Reed were the pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Kraklow, Chant Reed, Ray Martin, George Rausch, E.H. Mewes, Fred Freyermuth, Clarence Freyermuth, Daniel Winegard, Raymond Duffield and Ernest Fuhr. Flower attendants included Mesdames Raymond Duffield, Raymond Reed, Earl Price and Wesley Krueger.

One sister, Lavinia Davis; two half-sisters, Esther Hayes and Eva Drury; a brother, John Powell; and three half-brothers, William, Samuel and Henry Powell, preceded him in death.

Mr. Powell belonged to the Illinois City Camp of the Modern Woodmen of American and served for many years on the board of directors of the Illinois City school. He also served as a trustee, of the Illinois City Methodist church of which he was a member.
