Resident of City for Past 16 Years Succumbs After Extended Illness.
Mrs. Esther Powell Hayes, 80, a resident of Muscatine for the last 16 years, died at her home, 114 Laurel street, at 11:45 a.m. Sunday after an illness of several months.-
Mrs. Hayes was born Feb. 26, 1852 in Mifflin county, Pennsylvania, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs John Powell. Most of her life prior to coming to Muscatine was spent in the Illinois City community. she was married to Reynolds Hayes, Jan. 17, 1872. Mr Hayes died in 1917.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Ladies Aid society at Illinois City.
Surviving are three sons, John C. Hayes of Rock Island, Edgar H. hayes of Wilton, and Leslie V. Hayes of Illinois City; three daughters, Mrs. Stella McGinnis and Florence Barton of Illinois City and Miss Bessie Hayes at home; two half-brothers John and sherman Powell of Illinois City; and one half-sister, Miss Maud Powell of Washington, D.C.
Funeral services will be conduct4ed at 2 pm. Tuesday at the Illinois City church by the Rev. Caleb Larson. Burial will be at Illinois City. The body will remain at the home pending services.
