Powell - Amanda E., daughter of Leroy and Julia Batchelor, was born at Marietta, Ohio, November 16, 1837.
She was married to John Severns and to them were born one daughter, Eva Rose, who lives in the state of Washington.
Some years after the death of her husband she became the wife of John Powell and to them were born two sons and two daughters -- John G. and Sherman M., Mary E. of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. John Davis who died in Penyan, N.Y.
Mrs. Powell had three step-children - William Powell, Henry Powell of Davenport and Mrs. Ester Hayes of Muscatine. There are 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
After the death of Mr. Powell, she made her home in Illinois City where she enjoyed the loving care of children and grandchildren.
Tho she lived quietly, she took on interest in world matters and was mentally alert to the last. She was thirsty for knowledge, always careful and accurate in her statements and was a member of the M.E. church.
She was one of the pioneers who triumphantly battled with hardships and who lived to see most wonderful achievements in the world of religion, science, art and industry.
