In September 1944, during World War II, Walter completed training with the U.S. Merchant Marines at the U.S. Maritime Services facility in Brooklyn, New York. During that perilous time, he crisscrossed the Atlantic Ocean on cargo ships every few weeks. Ship manifests place him at sea ports in Baltimore MD, New York NY, Belgium, England and France.
Walter married Jeanne Marie Evans from Connecticut, circa 1944. They made their home in northern New Jersey, near his family. A daughter, Leona, was born in 1945. Following his discharge from the Merchant Marines, Walter worked as a carpenter. Jeanne divorced him around 1957. He never remarried.
Walter's name on his birth certificate is "Wladimir Maliawsky" but he was known as Walter. In early adulthood, he signed his name "Wladimir Maliawski". Later he signed as Walter Maliauski and his ID cards have "Walter Maliauski". The ending of "i" or "y" varies among family members. His daughter spells the name "Maliauski".
Information for his death certificate provided by his brother John Maliawski gives his name as Walter Maliawski. It mistakenly states he was never married or served in the military. In fact, he was divorced and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during wartime.
Walter lies in church owned grounds in an unmarked grave at Holy Cross Cemetery. Findagrave photo volunteer Lucy kindly found it's exact location with assistance from a cemetery employee using records with measurements. Thank you, Lucy!
Ironically, there is a 1953 deed for a plot at Holy Cross Cemetery paid for by Walter and in his name. That plot is occupied by his parents and brother Alexander.
