Alphonse Letourneau, 84, of Sanford, died April 9 at home after a brief illness.

He was born in Sanford on October 25, 1922, a son of Oliver and Angelina (Charette) Letourneau, Sr. and attended St. Ignatius School.

He was an army veteran of World War II.

After the war, he returned to Sanford where he was employed by the Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills, Lavalley Lumber, Eastern Plastics and Simplex. For several years he worked as a custodian at Edison School where he and the kids were especially fond of each other and they nicknamed him "Fonzie."

His family recalled how he was a homebody who enjoyed being around his family and that he was quite the jokester.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Johnstone) Letourneau of Sanford, 2 sons, Bernard Letourneau and his wife Jane of Lebanon, Daniel Letourneau and his wife Lauri of Waterboro, 2 daughters, Patricia Letourneau of Hollis, Kathy Stott and her husband Jay of Alfred, a brother, Noel Letourneau and his wife Hope of Sanford, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. Burial will be later in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
