6. OBITUARY, THE WEISER AMERICAN, 6/2/1927
LIFE'S JOURNEY ENDS FOR ALBERT J. HOPKINS - On Saturday, May 27, after only a few days' illness, the end of life came to one of Weiser's pioneer citizens, a man who had been active in its earlier growth and had served with honor in positions of trust and responsibility. Albert J. Hopkins had been a resident of Weiser since 1889. In 1908 he was appointed postmaster for a four-year term, but served until 1914.
When he located here, it was as a contractor and builder, and with Gilbert Tracy built the present Washington county court house the following year. It was this year that the main part of the town burned and Mr. Hopkins with others, moved to the present site and began the work of building the Weiser of today. He was successful in his work and became owner of considerable property. Before serving as postmaster, he had been a member of the Board of Education and served one term as county commissioner. Since the death of his wife in 1919, he led a retired life, spending a part of each year with his several children but always retaining a home in Weiser. After spending most of the winter with his daughter Winnifred in Blackfoot, Idaho, he came to Weiser some two weeks before his death and was staying with his son Lee.
He had for many years been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a firm supporter of its principles and it was by his brothers in this fraternal organization, using the beautiful ritual of the order, that he was laid to rest on Monday afternoon at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Albert J. Hopkins was born of pioneer parents in Huron county, Ohio on Sept. 7, 1846. He was married in Ohio on Nov. 24, 1867 to Miss Susan B. Brown. To them were born the following surviving children: Winnifred, who is the wife of Dr. W. F. Mitchell of Blackfoot; Verner J. who is well-known resident of Boise; Gladys, who is the wife of Dr. C. C. Cleary of Norborne, Missouri, George B, who went overseas in 1917 and remained there, Mrs. Frances Shelby of South Bend, WA; and Lee Hopkins of Weiser.
