5. OBITUARY, Source unknown.
WILLIAM W. HOPKINS, son of Williard K. and Jane Hopkins, was born September 27, 1844 at Greenwich, Ohio. On August 8, 1862 he enlisted in Company D, 101st O.V. I., and served nearly three years of the war, being mustered out at Camp Harker, Tenn., June 12, 1865.
He was united in marriage to Phoebe Jane Beers of Clarkesfield, O., on December 13, 1866. This happy union covered a span of nearly 58 years, she having preceded him in death April, 1924. To this union were born six children, five of whom survive him: Lewis and Willard of Akron, Clarence of Pittsburgh, Clayton of Wooster and Mrs. C. M. Doty of Elmore, O. Daughter, Maude, died 19 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins joined the Methodist church at East Greenwich in 1868, transferring their membership to the Methodist church at Greenwich in 1871 at the time of its organization, and were the last of its original members to pass away.
Except for his home, where he was ever the loving and devoted husband & father, his church claimed his deepest interest. For many years he served on the official board and as teacher in the Sunday school. In recognition of his long years of service to the church, on the occasion of his golden wedding anniversary the official board presented him with a n engraved gold headed cane; and this he prizes above all his possessions.
He was one of a family of ten children. Three brothers and one sister now survive him: Albert of Weiser, Idaho; Arman and George of Greenwich and Miss Dora Hopkins of Cleveland. There are left also thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
For the last three years he had made his home with his daughter in Elmore. On May 8th, while visiting his son in Wooster, he was suddenly stricken with apoplexy. In spite of all that loving hands could do for him, on May 28 at 12:15 o'c lock he answered the final summons at the age of 81y 8m 1d."
