Rose Ella Hobbs Butland, 88, passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2024, in her hometown of Vivian, Louisiana.

Born in Vivian on April 29, 1935, Rose was one of Earnest and Edith Hobbs' 13 children

She attended Vivian High School, graduating in 1953, leaving for California to attend Nursing School at the California Hospital School of Nursing on a full academic scholarship. There, she met and married her life-long partner, Robert "Bob" Butland, who preceded her in passing May 2021. They were together for 64 years.

Rose and Bob had 4 children and together built a life in Southern California. Her sister Pet and her husband Buddy always lived nearby, and the two families were as one, inseparable and sharing years together. Her brothers Larry and his wife Edna, and Buck and his wife Sylvia also spent years living nearby, and having so much of her family near her was a source of great joy to her.

She found her life's calling as a nurse, working in various hospitals in Southern California, before retiring, and together with Bob, she purchased land near her childhood home and built their dream home there. In her retirement, she and Bob traveled extensively here and abroad, visiting family, friends, and all those remote places she dreamt of.

Rose was quiet and polite, but never lacked for strong opinions and sometimes displayed a wicked, but always kind sense of humor. She was well-read and had a life-long love of reading and learning. She loved bowling and playing cards (and where you would've discovered her competitive streak.). She loved country music, especially Emmylou Harris.

She was courageous and entrepreneurial, investing in real estate, building 2 houses, and owning a laundromat. And she always kept a connection to Vivian, insisting on owning land there, and spoke wistfully of the "Home Place."

She was compassionate and tender-hearted, loved nature and the outdoors, and was a nurse even unto her last day, when she "rounded" one final time, before lying down to sleep and then left this world, where I'm certain Bob was eagerly awaiting her arrival.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

May Rose's soul rest in eternal peace with her husband Bob.
