Irene [whose family, fond of nicknames, called "R"] was the fifth of twelve children [four daughters] born to James Frank and Anna C. (Moel) Stochl. Her siblings: Celia Barbara, John Frances, Charlotte Emma, Frank Anton, Charles James, William Lester, James, George Joseph, Effie Anna, Cyril Felix and David Leo.

On August 30, 1916, Irene married Clark Eugene "Tanny" Tanberg, son of Charles and Lola Tanberg. They had no children.

Irene loved the outdoors and was fond of hunting, a sport she shared with both her father and her husband. According to a note on the back of an old photo, her favorite rifle was a 20-gauge Remington [shown at right] and her favorite hunting spot was along the Cedar River, just north of Solon. She was a sharp shooter and good enough to win several shooting trophies in Iowa City-area competitions.
