On August 30, 1916, Irene married Clark Eugene "Tanny" Tanberg, son of Charles and Lola Tanberg. They had no children.
Irene loved the outdoors and was fond of hunting, a sport she shared with both her father and her husband. According to a note on the back of an old photo, her favorite rifle was a 20-gauge Remington [shown at right] and her favorite hunting spot was along the Cedar River, just north of Solon. She was a sharp shooter and good enough to win several shooting trophies in Iowa City-area competitions.
