Charles (the family called him Bill) was the sixth child [of twelve] and third son born to James Frank and Anna [Moel] Stochl.

He enlisted as a Private to serve in World War I in the 163rd Depot Brigade. He was initially stationed at Camp Dodge, a soldiers' training camp just north of Des Moines.

The catastrophic influenza epidemic hit Camp Dodge hard and Bill was one of the 700 who lost their lives to the disease there. He was not married and is buried near his parents in St. Mary's Cemetery in Solon.
