"Hard-working woman dies -
Friends say Saginaw native Kathleen Bueker has "an unparalleled zest for life." "Years ago, I dubbed her the workin-est woman I know," said Beth Thompson, a longtime friend. Bueker died of cancer Feb. 28. She was 70. While a student at Arthur Hill High School, Bueker received a Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarship to study nursing. She graduated in 1948 and enrolled at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C., working while studying to become a registered nurse.

"That was something that she wanted to do and it meant a lot to her," said her brother, John Bueker of Hemlock. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Catholic University, and worked for a time as a clinical instructor in psychiatric nursing at St. Elizabeth's. Bueker's sister Margaret Clark recalled how her older sister "was always the first."

"She had a microwave first, a computer first; she was always up on technology," Clark said. That feature of her personality came in handy as a facilities consultant for the federal government, her brother said. His sister spent 30 years watch-dogging federally-supported hospitals. "Her job was to make sure the operators of the hospitals were using the money right," Bueker said. In 1969, while working for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, she received her doctorate in sociology from American University. After retiring, she worked as a consultant for the state of Virginia and municipalities nationwide.

Bueker was a resident of Deltaville, Va., at the time of her death. Cremation has taken place."
