Funeral services for Arthur Birt, Sr,Decatur paving contractor who died in his home in Decatur Friday will be held in the First Methodist church with burial in the Spangler cemetery. He had been in failing health for some time and influenza and pneumonia developed three days ago. He was 56 years old and lived in Decatur for the past 45 years. Until recently he was a partner with J. M. Driscoll in the contracting business. Nearly all the asphalt paving in the city was laid by this firm.
He was born in Chatsworth Oct. 6,1880 and came to Decatur at the age of 11. He began his career with the Tuttle & Mattes contracting co. and later went into business for himself. Between 1910 and 1915 he was interested in farm drainage working in all parts of the state. After the Birt & Driscoll partnership he was interested in rebuilding the old city dam in the Sangamon river and more recently the million dollar intercepting sewer. Other jobs included the lost bridge road.
He was a member of the First Methodist church and the Elks lodge,the National Association of Contractors,and the Illinois Contractors Association. He was president of the Brush College cemetery association. He was an active member of the Republican party.
He was married to Mary Rice of Decatur in 1898. Following her death in 1914 he was married in 1919 to Miss Florence Sowash. Besides his widow he leaves four sons, Halden,Floyd,Toland and James,one daughter, Macy all of Decatur. He has 3 half brothers and one sister Mrs. J. C. King of Colfax and seven grandchildren. His son Arthur Jr. was fatally injured in a car accident last years.
