Mr. Birt, a retired telegrapher, died yesterday in Jacksonville hospital after an illness of several months. He had been in failing health for six years. He was 74 years old.
Mr. Birt, who lived in Decatur for several years, was born March 15, 1866 in Otis, Ind. His wife, the former Lulu Maddox, preceded him in death.
He leaves a son, James Birt, Jr. of Decatur and two daughters, Mrs. Orville Wiseman of Detroit and Mrs. Arthur Deibert of Decatur.
