OLD PUMP MAN DEAD, CHILDREN'S FRIEND.--Plowed Snow From Walks Every Winter For Many Years.--J.M. Birt, the old pump man, died at 6 o'clock Tuesday morning at the family residence, 1704 East Wood street. His death was caused by paralysis after an illness of one month.
FRIEND TO CHILDREN.--Mr. Birt was the children's friend. Every child in the east part of the city and many on the west side knew him. In the winter, when the walks were covered with snow so that it was next to impossible for the little folks to get to school, Mr. Birt would get out bright and early with his plow and clean the snow from all the walks leading to the school houses on the east side of town, and frequently he found time to do the same for the children in the west part of the city.
SERVICE IN WAR.--Mr. Birt was born Sept. 5, 1843 at Piqua, Ohio. He left there when a boy and went to Logansport, Indiana. When war broke out he enlisted in Company K of the Seventy-Third Indiana infantry and served for three years. Many years ago he came to Decatur to reside. He was widely known and was held in high regard by all. He is survived by his wife, one son, J.A. Birt, and an adopted son, Arthur Birt, both of Decatur. Mrs. Birt is now confined to bed by her illness.
