Susanna Maria was one of six children born to George Washington and Frances "Fanny" Musselman Hansel. She had the following siblings: George Washington, Nancy Ann, Simon Peter, John, and Francis Marion.

She married Joseph Huston Rankin in 1848 and together they had the following children: George, Fanny, Charles, Jacob, Agnes "Aggie", and Sarah Caroline "Sadie".

On the 20 June 1865 at her residence in Wharton township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Susanna, died at the young age of 38. At the time of her death, her oldest child George was 17 and her youngest child Sarah Caroline "Sadie" was 4. She was laid to rest in the Hansel private family cemetery.

Her death notice read:
In the death of this estimable lady, society has lost one of its most useful members, her husband a loving partner, her children a tender and affectionate mother, and the poor a true friend, as many a living witness can justly testify. While her husband and six small children, in connection with a large circle of relatives and friends are left to mourn an irreparable loss, they have the infinite satisfaction of knowing that she was a true Christian and died in the faith of a living Savior.

Mrs. Rankin was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained true to her vow taken when first embracing the religion of the blessed gospel, and, in her last moments, as well as in her former life, she was happy in the love of God and strong in the faith of redemption through a crucified Savior. She passed __ the cold Jordan of death with a bright hope of a blessed immortality. Living as she had lived, well might she exclaim in the language of the Apostle, when the king of terrors stood by her bedside: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith – Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge shall give me at that day, and not be me _____, but unto all them also that love _____.
