Francis Marion was one of seven children born to George Washington and Frances "Fanny" Musselman Hansel. He had the following siblings: George, Susanna Maria, Nancy Ann, John, Simon Peter, and Frances "Fanny".

In 1844, when Francis was only a year old his father was killed when a tree fell on top of him. He was raised by his mother and siblings.

When he was 19 years of age, Francis enlisted in the Civil War serving with the Union troops. He was mustered in on 04 Sep 1862 with the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company E at Camp Curtin. On 09 Sep 1862, the 140th, attached to the 8th Corps, Middle Department, was initially ordered to Parktown, Maryland, for duty guarding the Northern Central Railroad. They were there until December of 1862 when they were ordered to join the Army of the Potomac on the front line. They reached Aquia Creek on 15 Dec 1862. The Regiment saw duty near Falmouth, Virginia, until April 1863.

On May 1-3, 1963, the 140th Infantry participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia.

On July 1-3, 1863, the 140th Infantry participated in the Battle of Gettysburg where Private Francis Marion Hansel was killed in action while engaging Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee on the last day of the battle, 03 Jul 1863.

At the time of his death he was only 20 years old. He was initially buried on the south side of George Rose's house along the woods where he was killed. He is now re-interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in the Pennsylvania Plot Section E Site #24.

Over the course of the Civil War, the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry had 1,132 officers and men enrolled in its ranks. Of these, 198 were killed or mortally wounded...17.4% which is among the highest rates of any Union Regiment that served.
