He moved to Farmington, Pennsylvania with his parents in 1833 when he was seven years old. He attended the public schools in Farmington and also attended a private school.
He remained on the home farm as his father's assistant until his father died in 1844. His father was buried on the family farm. George Washington Hansel rented his father's 400 acre family farm lying along the line of the Old National Road until he bought it in 1850. He dealt largely in live stock both as a breeder and buyer.
He married Mary Romesburg on November 28, 1852, in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Together they had thirteen children: Martha, John Wesley, William, Arminda "Minnie", James Newton, Mary Ellen "Molly", Rachel, Robert, Edward, Franklin, Alvin, George, and Bertha.
In 1877 he was elected justice of the peace, an office he held several years. He was an elder at the Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church in Farmington, Pennsylvania and though not ardent into politics belonged to the Republican party and was formerly an old Whig. He was interested in the common schools of his town having belonged to the Wharton Township, Farmington, Pennsylvania Board of Directors. He died on November 14, 1896 of Bright's Disease in Farmington, Pennsylvania, at the age of 70, and is buried in the Hansel Cemetery.
