Last Rites Held

For Mrs. Shields


Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah (Sadie) Ann Shields, age 70, were conducted Thursday in Ridgeway, Ill., with burial there. She formerly resided in Franklin.


Mrs. Shields died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Peifer, in Ridgeway, late Monday night, where she had been critically ill for several weeks.


Born Sarah Ann Lanam May 5, 1878, in Brown county, her mother died while she was a baby and Mrs. Shields was reared by foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.


She was married twice. Her first marriage took place Aug. 3, 1895 to John W. Snyder who preceded her in death. She was married the second time to Hugh Shields on Dec. 25, 1938. Mr. Shields died March 3, 1943.


Three daughters and two sons survive. They are Mrs. Wilbur Henderson, of Franklin; Mrs. Peifer, of Ridgeway; Mrs. A. A. Anaya, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Grant Snyder and Donald Snyder, both of Cape Girardeau, Ill.


One sister, Mrs. Ella Bennett and two brothers, Glen Lanam and Oliver Lanam, all of Bloomington, remain with 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sadie Shields, Former Resident, Passes Away


Mrs. Sadie Shields, age 70 years, a former resident of Brown County, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Inez Pfifer in Ridgway Ill., last Sunday. She was the youngest daughter of Solomon and Sarah A. Lanam, deceased.


She leaves three daughters and two sons: Inez Pfifer of Ridgway, Ill; Betty of Franklin, Ind.; Lucille of California and Grant and Don of Cape Girardeau, Mo. Also one brother, Oliver Lanam of Ellettsville; one sister, Mrs. Ella Bennett, of Bloomington; a half brother, two sisters, several cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Mrs. John Floyd of Nashville, is a sister-in-law and Mrs. Orval Rogers is a cousin.


Interment was at Ridgway, Ill.
