Robert S Brown was born circa 1850, in Georgia. Son of Alexander W Brown (1812 - ?) and grandson of James Brown (1765 - 1850) who was from Scotland.

● In the 1860 US Census for Jackson, Alabama, he is listed as age 10 and living with his father and mother (Nancy) and 3 of his older siblings (Mary, Alex, and Abe).

[The rest of his older siblings were previously enumerated in the 1850 Census for Morgan, Georgia, but not Robert, leading to the assumption that he was born after the census of 1850]

● In the 1870 US Census for Jackson, Alabama, there is a listing for "Stephen Brown" age 22, living with his father, stepmother Louisa, younger stepbrother John W. Lunsford and half-sister Matilda J Brown. This might be Robert, if his middle name is Stephen.

● In August of 1876 in Washington County, Texas, he married Nancy Sarah Catherine Bond.

● In the 1880 US Census for Bell County, Texas, he is listed as follows:
→R. S. H. Brown age 24 (born in Georgia, father born in Scotland, mother born in Georgia)
→N. S. C. Brown, age 24
→Chas. Brown, age 2
→Myrtle Brown, age 9 months.

● In the 1900 US Census for Falls County, Texas, he is living with his daughter Ludie Pearl and her husband Sam Wooley. Have not been able to locate the rest of the family yet:
→R. Brown, age 51. Born Jun 1948, Georgia. Married 1878; both parents born in Georgia.

He has not yet been found in the 1910 or 1920 Censuses.

● There is a death certificate on file in Milam County for a "Chas. V. Brown" who died on April 30, 1926. The informant on the certificate is "M. H. Hagerty" who is Robert Brown's son-in-law. However, the actual Charles V Brown (Robert's oldest son) is known to have lived until 1934. This is therefore not the death certificate for Charles V. Brown. Rather I believe it is for Robert Brown and there was some mix-up when noting down the information.

On the death certificate, it notes that the place of burial will be Salem Cemetery on 5/1/26. The undertakers are C N Green & Bros, Cameron.

Additional family lore:

○ My father thought his full name was "Robert Louis Stevenson Brown" but I can find no confirmation of that. The novelist was born in 1850, so it is not possible that he was named after him.

○ He supposedly enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 16 under General Longstreet.

○ He is said to have worked for the railroad in Temple, Texas.

***Research Update Oct 6 2022***
I finally found the identity of Robert Brown's father (Alexander Brown) by following up on some tantalizing Ancestry DNA matches and looking through their public trees. Ancestry had not previously been able to suggest any hints. A few days after I added my guess of Alexander Brown to my tree, many more DNA matches popped up, confirming the hypothesis.

Alexander and his first wife (Nancy Ann Silvey) seem to have had 11 children: Evaliza, George, Elizabeth, William, Susan, James, Alila, Mary, Alexander, Abe, and Robert.

Alexander Brown's second wife (Louisa Lunsford Bullard) bore him three more children (Matilda, Lucius, and Paul), and it's the descendants of these children who I originally DNA matched with, though I have since found a few hits for descendants of older brother James as well.

***Research Update Oct 28 2022***
I have also now confirmed (through DNA matches) the identity of Alexander Brown's father, James Brown. James Brown's will lists 6 children: Alexander W, Ann, Mary Silvey, Sarah, Margaret Beasley, and Caroline.

Gravesite Details

I contacted the current Green-Patterson Funeral Home of Cameron, Texas to ask about the whereabouts of Robert Brown's grave. While they have been in business since 1907, they had a fire in the 60's and all their records were lost.
