Funeral Services will be held tomorrow for S. J. Hanks, 85, member of a pioneer Macon county family and a third cousin of Abraham Lincoln, who died Wednesday night in Decatur and Macon County hospital.
Rites will be at 1:30 p. m. in Grace Methodist church, with burial in Maroa Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dawson & Wikoff funeral home until 3 p. m. today and at the family home after 4p.m.
Mr. Hanks was born in Maroa township on Lincoln's birthday, Feb. 12, 1864, and for the last 57 years had made his home on the Bloomington road about eight miles north of Decatur where he had farmed.
MR. HANKS was a son of William B. "Gold Bill" and Adeline Wigle Hanks. His father, who was a second cousin of Abraham Lincoln, and his mother are buried in Boiling Springs cemetery.
S. J. Hanks' grandfather, James Hanks, is said to have been one of the first settlers in Macon county. Records here show that he entered land in Hickory Point township in 1833 after coming to Illinois from Kentucky. He served on the first and second grand juries to convene in Macon county. He died in 1852 and is buried in Hickory Point township at a spot overlooking Stevens creek.
On July 12, 1888, S. J. Hanks was married to Martha Greenfield in the St. Nicholas hotel here. They celebrated their wedding anniversary here annually with many of their descendents as guests.
BESIDES HIS WIFE, Mr. Hanks leaves seven children. They are Paul and Hal Hanks, at home, Mrs. Audrey Parlier, Bloomington, Mrs. Bess Little, Mrs. Dorothy Reed, Mrs. Helen Cannon and Harold Hanks, all of Decatur. Three children preceded him in death.
Mr. Hanks was the last of a family of 7 children. There are 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.
