Death of Thos. J. Cockrell

Thomas Jefferson Cockrell was born in Washington county, Indiana, July 6, 1832 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. O. Ames, Thursday, May 4, 1916 at the age of 83 years 9 months and 28 days.

He moved to Missouri in childhood where he remained until 1883 when he removed to Kansas, which state has been his home ever since except 5 years he spent in Oklahoma.

He was united in marriage to Keziah Church, December 28, 1851, who died January 1914. To this union were 11 children of whom 8 are still alive. The following children: Columbus of Montana, David A., Francis M., Sherman and John of Oklahoma, Grant of Colorado, Mrs. Miles and Mrs Johnson of Montana and Mrs. W. O. Ames of Riley mourn the loss of a father.

He was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist church.

Mr. Cockrell was a private in Co. E. 6th Regiment Mo. Cavalry during the civil war. He was a member of the G. A. R. at Neal Kans. Thus for him "taps" have sounded and his tent is pitched for that long rest on that other shore from which the bugle calls fail to awaken him.

Mr. Cockrell has been bed fast since the last Wednesday of last year, only being able to sit in a chair for a few moments at a time. The 12th of March while trying to get from his bed to his chair he fell and falling struck his cane which broke a bone in his hip. Since which time he has suffered, gradually growing worse till death released him.

Funeral services were held at the cemetery conducted by Rev. Will G. Thompson and interment in the Riley cemetery Friday afternoon. They sympathy of all goes out to those that mourn.
