Death of Mrs. Thos. J. Cockrell.
Mrs. Thos. J. Cockrell nee Keziah Church, was born on the 7th of July, 1831, in Murray Co., Tenn.
At the age of 7 years, she left her native state and accompanied her parents to Marion county, Ill., where she obtained her education and developed into womanhood. She united with the M. E. church at the age of 16.
On the 28th day of Dec. 1851, Miss Church was united in marriage with Mr. Thomas J. Cockrell and spent the first two years of wedded life in Illinois, after which they moved to Cass county, Mo., remaining there four years. They then decided to go to Newton county in southern Missouri where they lived for 26 years. From there they went to Miami county, Kansas, then left the state for Oklahoma, but after four years returned to Kansas and spent the last six years at Riley.
Eleven children were born to them of which, two preceded the mother in death.
Mrs. Cockrell died on the 25th of Jan. 1914, at the age of 82 years, 6 months, 18 days and thus surpassed the allotted time of four score years. She leaves her aged husband, nine children, six sons, Columbus of Montana, David A., Francis M. and Sherman of Oklahoma, Grant of Colorado and John of Riley. Three daughters, Mrs. Miles and Mrs. Johnson of Montana and Mrs. Ames of the Grandview neighborhood.
The funeral services took place on the 27th of January at the home, conducted by Rev. Moery. A mixed quartette consisting of Mrs. John Fuller, Miss Edna Kaiser; Messrs John Hassebroek and B. Dunlap sang several appropriate hymns.
The remains were laid to rest in the Riley cemetery.
