Mordecai Cockrell Dead.
Mordecai Cockrell, an old and esteemed citizen of Riley county, died at his home near Riley, Tuesday, August 9th. Mr. Cockrell was 76 years of age, and came to Kansas in 1857, settling in Pottawatomie county. Seven years ago he changed his residence to Riley county and since that time has lived on his farm south of Riley. In an early day he gained considerable wealth by speculating in land and at the time of his death was worth $30,000. Mr. Cockrell was a man who never had much confidence in banks and preferred to keep his money in a "strong box" at home. At the time of his death he had $4,000 in cash in this strong box, besides many thousands in notes and mortgages. The deceased leaves a wife and seven children. By request of the heirs J. W. Lowdermilk will be appointed administrator for the estate. Mr. Cockrell was a cousin to Senator Cockrell, of Missouri.
