RACHEL FRANCIS, 86, DIES HERE SATURDAY;
FUNERAL RITES MONDAY
Mrs. Rachel Viola Francis, who would have been 87 on Mar. 14, died last Saturday at the home of her son, Edgar Francis, in failing health for sometime. She was seriously ill for seven weeks.
Mrs. Francis was born Rachel Viola Cupp, near Locust Hill in Knox County, the daughter of Howell D. and Mary Cupp. On Mar. 25, 1883 she married William Edward Francis.
The young couple began housekeeping on a farm near La Plata. In June 1886, their only son, Edgar Ray Francis was born. It was the same farm, which is now managed by Edgar, on which Mrs. Francis died Saturday, almost 70 years after making her home there.
Her husband, William, died Jan. 17, 1899. One brother and five sisters preceded her in death. Three sisters and one brother of the twelve Cupp children survive. They are Mrs. Martha Francis of La Plata, Mrs. Emma Shearer of Kirksville, Mrs. Alphena Ayers of Galesburg, Illinois, and William Cupp of La Plata. Three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive her.
Mrs. Francis was a member of the Star Christian Church, joining in 1895. She was also a charter member of the Sue City Lodge of Rebekahs.
Funeral services were held Monday, Mar. 2, at the New Harmony Church, east of La Plata. Burial was in the New Harmony Cemetery with Wilson Funeral Home in charge.
